A customer opens an AI assistant and types: "Find me a gluten-free birthday cake mix I can pick up near me today." A year ago that question ended with a list of links. Today, more and more often, it ends with a product, a price and a button.

That shift has a name: agentic commerce. AI assistants are starting to search, compare and fill carts on a shopper's behalf. For independent retailers, it raises one urgent question: when an assistant goes looking for a product you carry, will it find your store?

ShelfPerks is building the answer. Starting in January 2027, we plan to give ShelfPerks merchants a way for their products to be found, and added to a cart, through AI shopping assistants, while the sale, the customer and the checkout stay with the store.

Key takeaways

  • Agentic commerce means AI assistants that search, compare and start purchases for shoppers.
  • The National Retail Federation lists generative AI shopping tools among its predictions for 2026 and says brand visibility may come to depend on AI optimization rather than traditional SEO or paid ads.
  • The large AI platforms reach merchants through structured product data and approval programs, which are hard for a single small store to set up alone.
  • ShelfPerks is building a way for merchants' products to be discovered and carted through AI shopping assistants, planned to start in January 2027.
  • The best preparation today is clean product data and accurate, real-time inventory.

What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is shopping where an AI agent acts for the shopper. Instead of returning ten blue links, the assistant understands the request, checks products and availability, and can build a cart or complete a purchase.

The National Retail Federation's January 2026 trends piece described it plainly. It said agentic shopping is accelerating product discovery and the path to purchase, and noted that ChatGPT's Instant Checkout lets shoppers buy without leaving the chat window. The same piece cited a Forrester prediction that one quarter of shoppers will use specialty retail chatbots in 2026.

Why does this matter for independent stores?

Big retailers have teams that send product data to every new channel. Most independent stores do not. That gap matters, because AI assistants can only recommend what they can read.

The NRF piece made the point directly: brand visibility may depend on AI optimization rather than traditional SEO or paid ads. If a shopper asks for a product you have on the shelf right now, but the assistant cannot see your catalog, the recommendation goes to someone else.

There is also an advantage hiding here. Independent stores often carry the specialty, local and hard-to-find products that shoppers ask assistants about. A specific question like "kosher-for-Passover matzo meal near me" or "Japanese pottery glaze in stock" plays to a specialist's strengths, if the store can be found.

How do AI assistants find products today?

Each platform has its own route, and most of them start with structured product data:

  • ChatGPT. OpenAI's merchant documentation says ChatGPT uses a structured product feed with titles, descriptions, images, prices and availability. Feed onboarding is currently open to approved partners, and merchants apply through a form.
  • Google AI Mode and Gemini. Google's guide to the Universal Commerce Protocol describes two paths: a native checkout path, and a cart path that moves a shopper's cart to the merchant's own website. Merchants need a Merchant Center account with a product feed, and Google must approve the integration before it goes live.

Each route has its own product rules, too. OpenAI, for example, lists age-restricted goods such as alcohol and nicotine among its restricted categories.

For one store, that means separate feeds, separate applications and separate rules to keep up with. For a platform that already holds a merchant's live catalog, it is a problem that can be solved once.

What is ShelfPerks building?

ShelfPerks already runs the point of sale, real-time inventory, online store and reporting for independent retailers in one Store Operating System. That catalog is the starting point for agentic commerce.

Here is the direction, at a high level:

  • Be found. Your products, prices and stock levels, drawn from the same system you use at the register, presented in the structured form AI shopping assistants read.
  • Get carted. Shoppers who find your product through an assistant can add it to a cart with your store.
  • Keep the sale yours. You stay the seller. Your prices, your inventory and your checkout with the payment processor you already use.
  • Stay in control. You decide which products are shared.

We plan to start delivering this to ShelfPerks merchants in January 2027. We will share details, timing and eligibility as each piece is ready.

Why real-time inventory is the foundation

An AI assistant that sends a customer to a store for a product that sold out an hour ago does damage twice: once to the customer's trip, and once to the store's reputation. Accurate stock is what makes a recommendation trustworthy.

That is why ShelfPerks is building agentic commerce on the system that already updates inventory with every sale. When the shelf changes, the data an assistant sees should change with it.

What can you do now to get ready?

You do not need to wait for launch to prepare. The work that helps AI assistants find you also helps your online store, your search listings and your staff.

  1. Clean up product titles and descriptions. Use the name a shopper would type, plus size, flavor or color.
  2. Record barcodes. Manufacturer UPCs help platforms match your product to the right listing.
  3. Add real product photos. Clear, accurate images of the actual item.
  4. Keep inventory accurate. Regular cycle counts keep the numbers honest.
  5. Get your online store running. ShelfPerks e-commerce is included on Plus and Premium and can be added to Free and Standard.

Our step-by-step checklist, how to clean up product data for AI shopping assistants, walks through each fix.

Frequently asked questions

What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is shopping where an AI assistant acts on the shopper's behalf. The assistant searches for products, compares options and can build a cart or start a purchase, instead of only returning a list of links.

Will AI shopping assistants replace my store?

No. Assistants still need a store to supply the product. The question is which stores they can see. Stores with structured product data and accurate inventory are in a better position to be recommended.

When will ShelfPerks agentic commerce be available?

ShelfPerks plans to deliver a way for merchants' products to be found and carted through AI shopping assistants starting in January 2027. Details and eligibility will be shared as each part is ready.

Do I need to change my payment processor?

ShelfPerks is designing agentic commerce so that checkout stays with the merchant's store and the processor it already uses.

How can I prepare my store today?

Clean up product titles and descriptions, record manufacturer barcodes, add clear product photos and keep inventory accurate in real time. These steps help AI assistants, search engines and your own online store.
